Key Information

As road networks become more complex – through greater use of roadside devices and data overlays, for example – those working in the ITS and transport industries are increasingly needing to understand system security, big data and future vehicle technologies.

The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Micro-credential enables learners to build their understanding of core smart transport and ITS concepts and gain knowledge of best practices to follow.

This micro-credential is suited to those currently working in the transport industry, or who would like to further their understanding to enable a change of industry.

Breakdown of the Course/Module

This micro-credential provides learners with knowledge and skills across key topics and technology. This may include:

  • ITS Architecture and common field hardware, including future opportunities.
  • Networking and communications, including a foundational understanding of switches and routers, as well as exploring the basics of serial, LPWAN and MQTT communications.
  • Cyber security awareness, exploration of relevant standards and certifications and review of risks to ITS asset types.
  • Understanding the basics of big data, including what it is, how we store and analyse it, and how to take useful insights from it.
  • Artificial intelligence, computer vision and machine learning fundamentals for ITS
  • Future vehicle technologies, such as Mobility-as-a-Service, autonomous vehicles and connected ITS (C-ITS).
  • Smart City technologies
  • Digital engineering, including digital twins, Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality, and LIDAR.
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) and high-resolution mapping.
  • Building information Modelling (BIM) applications throughout construction and service delivery, including throughout ITS projects.

Dr Gary Allwood
Training and Operations Manager

Dr Gary Allwood is Training and Operations Manager at Skills Lab, responsible for developing and delivering industrial digitalisation micro-credentials and qualifications. Gary has a Bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics, and a first-class honours degree in physics, as well as a PhD in Engineering/Physics which focused on developing novel fibre optic-based sensors for industrial applications. Gary specialises in control engineering, SCADA, sensors, optical fibres and optoelectronics, completing several industry-recognised courses in industrial automation and control, and software engineering.

With more than 25 years of experience, Damian specialises in industrial automation, process control, cloud technologies, and data analytics. As a Principal Consultant at Nukon for seven years, he led solutions for waste management, food and beverage, manufacturing, and mining clients, focusing on Industry 4.0 roadmaps and Lean Thinking to improve efficiency. Damian also co-authored the 22460VIC Industrial Networks and Communications Performance Activities course, reflecting his dedication to advancing industry knowledge and education. Having designed and project-managed solutions using AWS and Azure cloud technologies, as well as working with data platforms such as MSSQL, PostgreSQL, Databricks, Redshift, and IoT platforms such as AWS IoT, Damian brings a wealth of hands-on experience to each training session.

With our cyber physical training, you can complete the course from home or your workplace. It is recommended that learners have a good internet connection, webcam and microphone when undertaking cyber physical training either at home or from the workplace. Information on how to access training platforms will be emailed to you prior to the course commencing.
