Key Information

This course begins by starting a PLC project from the beginning, including configuring IO, IO mapping, analogue scaling, tag arrays, alias tags, good project structure and looks at the 2 most common sequence control methods used by SAGE Engineers. Then we program and commission a Skills Lab platform to complete a set scope of work using the 2 sequence methodologies.

In this course, you will learn how to implement a PLC project from the beginning and how to fault find a PLC program effectively.

Learning Objectives

This is an intermediate PLC programming course using RSLogix5000 or Siemens Step 7 software and covers the following topics:

  • Creating a new project and I/O configuration
  • Configuration of communication drivers
  • Input and Output mapping
  • Analog input scaling
  • Sequence control using integer step number programming
  • Sequence control using action/reaction step programming
  • A challenging project that uses all the skills and knowledge gained.

The course content can also be mapped to the following nationally recognised unit of competency:

  • UEEIC0015 Develop, enter and verify word and analogue control programs for programmable logic controllers

Dr Gary Allwood is Training and Operations Manager at Skills Lab, responsible for developing and delivering industrial digitalisation micro-credentials and qualifications. Gary has a Bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics, and a first-class honours degree in physics, as well as a PhD in Engineering/Physics which focused on developing novel fibre optic-based sensors for industrial applications. Gary specialises in control engineering, SCADA, sensors, optical fibres and optoelectronics, completing several industry-recognised courses in industrial automation and control, and software engineering.

Yes, we recommend that participants complete the Intermediate Industrial Automation Micro-credential before enrolling in Advanced Industrial Automation.

The accredited course has two prerequisite units - UEEIC0013 - Develop, enter and verify discrete control programs for programmable controllers and UEECD0007 - Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace.
