This course is an introduction to all the principles of automation, including how programmable logic controllers (PLCs) interact with real word using sensors and actuators.
The course covers electro-pneumatic and electrical relay theory and practicals, as well as variable speed drive configuration.
The course utilises state of the art custom built training platforms which mimic real world manufacturing plants. The participants learn how to program and commission a Skills Lab training platform to operate to a scope of work, in addition to learning how to fault find and
problem-solve in a systematic manner.
This course can be delivered using a broad range of PLC platforms, including Rockwell, Siemens, and Schneider Electric.
Courses are suitable for all people associated with industrial automation technology including, but not limited to:
- Apprentices
- Tradespeople
- Engineers (professional, graduate and undergraduate)
- Persons interested in refreshing or advancing their technical skills.
Breakdown of the Course/Module
Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
- Apply Occupational Health and Safety practices to PLC based control systems.
- Describe digital sensors including optical, capacitive, and inductive, and their different attributes.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of electro-pneumatics.
- Describe both single and dual acting actuators and their attributes.
- Perform basic VSD configuration.
- Describe and install PLC hardware.
- Establish communications with PLCs via a serial or
- Ethernet connection.
- Address physical inputs and outputs and perform IO mapping.
- Create variables and monitor their states in real-time.
- Download, upload, and go online to a PLC.
- Write a simple ladder logic program and demonstrate an understanding of simple sequence and latching and unlatching.
- Implement control functions including timers, counters, and relay logic.
- Problem solve and fault find a ladder logic-based program.
- Use help files and document a PLC program.

Dr Gary Allwood is Training and Operations Manager at Skills Lab, responsible for developing and delivering industrial digitalisation micro-credentials and qualifications. Gary has a Bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics, and a first-class honours degree in physics, as well as a PhD in Engineering/Physics which focused on developing novel fibre optic-based sensors for industrial applications. Gary specialises in control engineering, SCADA, sensors, optical fibres and optoelectronics, completing several industry-recognised courses in industrial automation and control, and software engineering.

As a Principal Consultant at Nukon for seven years, he led solutions for waste management, food and beverage, manufacturing, and mining clients, focusing on Industry 4.0 roadmaps and Lean Thinking to improve efficiency. Damian also co-authored the 22460VIC Industrial Networks and Communications Performance Activities course, reflecting his dedication to advancing industry knowledge and education. Having designed and project-managed solutions using AWS and Azure cloud technologies, as well as working with data platforms such as MSSQL, PostgreSQL, Databricks, Redshift, and IoT platforms such as AWS IoT, Damian brings a wealth of hands-on experience to each training session.

The accredited course has a prerequisite unit UEECD0007 - Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace. We offer this unit to those who have not already completed it. If required, this unit must be commenced prior to attending the Introduction to Automation course, with self-paced study using the learner resources in the Skills Lab learning management system and completion of a knowledge assessment.
